It all started Easter Sunday, March 29, 1891. The Wyncote Mission, begun by members of Grace Church, Jenkintown, held its first service in the small chapel that stood at the corner of Greenwood and Fernbrook Avenues. That mission was organized into Calvary Presbyterian Church on May 20, 1892, by the Presbytery of Philadelphia. More than a century later, Calvary Presbyterian is an active, growing church with an ever expanding area of mission and outreach.
Calvary Presbyterian is a small, vibrant church, which embraces a diversity of ages, religious backgrounds and theological searching among its members. Our church contains a rich blend of older, long-standing members and younger, newer members. Our older members are devoted, active members who cherish Calvary and bring a sense of history and tradition, as well as years of experience and hard work, to the church. Within the past 15 years, we have seen a growth in the number of young families who have become very active in the life of the church. These young families are actively questioning and seeking to create new, meaningful traditions in the face of the challenges of organized religion in today’s society, without sacrificing the fundamentals of a long-standing tradition.
Many of our members come from religious backgrounds other than Presbyterian. These members have very consciously chosen Calvary because it is a community where diverse views and an open discussion of faith are accepted. The rich texture of these discussions adds depth and vigor to our worship, study, mission and fellowship. As Presbyterians, we are dedicated to listening to the ideas and beliefs of each member, and ensuring that each voice is heard in the decision-making processes that govern every aspect of the church.
We invite you to become a part of our family of faith!
